Letter and Number confusion
Hello!
My daughter is just starting to recognize her numbers and letters. She gets lower case L, the number 1, and some fonts of uppercase I confused. Are there any tricks to help with that? Similarly, the letter O and the number 0.

Hi Jaclyn,
You probably already know this, but letter and number confusion is EXTREMELY common. Kids will even mix up triangle and the letter A when they're first learning. It's only confounded by the fact that we sometimes say, "4 'oh' 5" for 405!
But confusion is a good sign when learning and shows that she is trying to make sense of it all. We, as adults get confused as well when we're learning new things.
My first go-to would be continuing to expose her in meaningful ways to numbers and letters and help her understand their roles (such as, numbers on a house for the address, numbers in a phone number, letters in a book, letters on the "Target" sign). Exposure, exposure, exposure...in meaningful ways to help her make sense of it.
When she gets them confused in exposing her, say something like, "You're right. That does look like the letter l, but it's a 1 because in a phone number, we use numbers; not letters."
Another suggestion I have is to do letter and number sorts. Type out numbers and letters in different fonts and have her sort them. Maybe only choose 2 letters and 2 numbers in the same sort, but I wouldn't put the ones she confuses together; especially at first.

Becky's advice is great! I agree that the more exposure she has the better and when she starts seeing the 0 with other numbers and the l with other letters in words it won't be as confusing.
