Hand-y Bookmarks

One of the many resources you'll find over at Signing Time is their monthly Handy Crafts. Since school is just around the corner, we thought it would be fun to make new bookmarks for our school books. Here is the link to the directions for this fun and easy craft.

ASL Alphabet & Math Flip Cards

I wish I could remember where I saw this neat idea...so please know it's not an original of mine, but one I found on one of the many blogs I visit. I loved this idea because it was simple and inexpensive, and my boys really like it.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 1 book of spiral bound index cards
  • scissors
  • black sharpie pen

Begin cutting your book of index cards into thirds. I guessed at the width and that…

Signing Language with Arthur

Another great resource posted on my blog: Signing for Life

Arthur teaches kids how to sign their letters and some basic words online...he even teaches them how to sign their names. My boys thought this was pretty cool and enjoyed this very much.

Hi Megan,

Thank you!

I saw your site & articles on using ASL with your family. Very nice.

I love learning ASL and teaching others. We are teaching our young daughter ASL and at 17 months we just roughly counted this weekend and she has over 30 words! how cool! To share this great joy I started my blog in honor of her. I now provide tips for others, 'how-to' articles and sell great sign language products to help teachers and families learn.
I'm also a speech-language pathologist who uses it in the school systems and privately.
Happy Signing!

In my Kindergarten classroom we use sign language frequently as we do our school pledge, sight words, ABC's, and in giving directions, and during transitions.  I love that not only is it another language, but it incorporates movement that those young bodies need.  It's amazing how quick they catch on.  We also have a large number of students at our school that the visual that sign language brings helps their understanding of directions and what you are asking them to do.

Wow, I didn't know that, about the ASL and other languages. I'm an aspiring polyglot, so I'll keep it in mind for both myself and future students! Once I get my degree, I want to go into Teach For America. I also would like to teach ESOL in Asia and possibly (although I'm not exactly sure yet) the Peace Corps. Eventually I'd like to settle in a public or private school in the North East teaching k-2. I've only had experience really teaching second graders, being involved in a program called Agriculture in the Classroom, and it was an absolute joy. This is my plan! Thanks for the welcome!

Hello! I actually do not have students yet. I'm in my junior year of college for Special/Elementary/ESOL Education. I begin field work next semester and will get to student teach next fall. I'm very excited! I am very OCD about planning ahead, though, which is why I'm on here reading about teaching and collecting ideas for when I finally get to run my own classroom.
Thank you for the welcome!
