One of my favorite things to do in my classroom is Souvenir Bits. It is a great way to help improve reading comprehension. I found the idea while researching the Four Blocks method. A colleague and I ended up doing a small presentation at our MRA's (MI Reading Assoc) annual conference a few years ago. I have taken what I learned and adapted it to my 1st grade curriculum.
